A debit card gives direct access to money in your bank account. If the card is lost, a transaction fails, the card stops working or you notice an unauthorised transaction, the action you should take depends on the problem.
This guide helps you identify the issue and reach the right BankBodh guidance quickly.
Quick Help — What Is Your Problem?
Card lost, stolen or compromised?
Block the card immediately through an official bank channel.
Card Lost, Stolen or Compromised →Transaction you did not make?
Report an unauthorised debit-card transaction to your bank immediately.
Unauthorised Card Transactions →Card payment failed but account debited?
A debit from your account does not necessarily mean the merchant received the money.
Card Payment Failed / Money Debited →ATM or cash withdrawal problem?
For cash not received, card retained by ATM or other ATM-related problems, use our dedicated guide.
ATM & Cash →My Debit Card Is Declined / Not Working
A declined transaction does not necessarily mean that there is a problem with the card itself.
Check whether:
- sufficient balance is available in the account;
- the card has expired;
- the correct PIN is being used;
- the transaction is within the applicable limit;
- ATM, POS, online/e-commerce, contactless or international usage is enabled for the transaction you are attempting;
- the bank has temporarily restricted the card for security or compliance reasons; or
- there is a temporary technical problem with the bank, card network, ATM, merchant terminal or payment system.
If the reason is not apparent, check your bank’s official app/internet banking or contact the bank through an official channel.
Forgotten PIN / PIN Blocked
If you have forgotten your debit-card PIN, use your bank’s authorised facility to generate or reset it. Depending upon the bank, this may be available through an ATM, mobile banking, internet banking or another authenticated channel.
Repeatedly entering an incorrect PIN may temporarily block PIN-based transactions.
Manage Your Debit-Card Controls & Limits
Modern debit cards may support several transaction channels. Depending upon the bank and card, customers may be able to switch particular transaction channels on or off and set or modify transaction limits.
A useful safety practice
Keep transaction facilities you do not normally use disabled and enable them when required. For example, if you never use your debit card internationally, there may be little reason to keep international usage continuously enabled.
Card Expired, Damaged or Replacement Required
Check the expiry date printed on your card. Banks may issue a replacement before an existing card expires, subject to the bank’s applicable process and your account/card status.
If you expect a replacement card:
- ensure your registered mobile number and communication address are current;
- track communications only through official bank channels;
- activate the replacement card using the bank’s prescribed process; and
- securely destroy the old card once it is no longer required.
If a card is physically damaged or its chip is not working reliably, request replacement rather than repeatedly attempting transactions.
Debit-Card Charges
Debit-card charges can vary depending upon the bank, account type, card variant and service used. Charges may potentially relate to matters such as card issuance or annual maintenance, replacement of a card, or ATM transactions beyond applicable free limits.
If a charge appears incorrect, ask the bank:
- What is the charge for?
- What is the applicable tariff or rule?
- Why has it been applied to your account?
If Your Problem Is Not Resolved
Use the bank’s official complaint mechanism and retain the complaint/reference number.
If the issue remains unresolved, use the bank’s prescribed escalation mechanism.
Where the complaint falls within the applicable framework and remains unresolved after following the required process, the customer may subsequently have recourse to the RBI Ombudsman mechanism.
BankBodh’s Bank Complaint Directory can help you find the appropriate complaint and escalation channels.
