Cyber Fraud / Unauthorised Transaction

Lost money or noticed a suspicious banking transaction? Know what to do immediately.

Money lost or unauthorised transaction detected? Act immediately.

Do not wait for the bank’s normal complaint-escalation process before reporting the fraud.
1. Report it to your bank immediately

Inform your bank about the fraudulent or unauthorised transaction as soon as possible.

Use the bank’s official fraud-reporting / unauthorised-transaction channel where available, or another official complaint channel provided by the bank.

Why speed matters:

RBI’s customer-protection framework states that customers should notify their bank of an unauthorised electronic banking transaction at the earliest. Delay in reporting can affect the risk of loss and, depending on the circumstances, the customer’s liability.
2. Call the National Cyber Crime Helpline — 1930
National Cyber Crime Helpline:
1930

For cyber financial fraud, report the incident immediately.

Verify 1930 on the official National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal →
3. Report the cyber fraud online

Use the Government of India’s National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal to report the incident online.

Open National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal →
Verify the Cyber Crime Reporting Portal through I4C / Ministry of Home Affairs →
4. Secure the affected banking channels
→ Block or secure the affected card, account or payment channel through your bank’s official facilities, where necessary.
→ Change compromised banking passwords / credentials through the bank’s official website or app.
→ Check your account for any other unauthorised transactions.
→ Inform the bank immediately if further suspicious transactions are noticed.
Never share confidential banking credentials

Never share your OTP, PIN, CVV, card password, internet/mobile banking password or other confidential banking credentials with anyone, including a person claiming to represent your bank.
5. Preserve the evidence

Keep the information relating to the fraud available for your bank, the Cyber Crime authorities and any subsequent grievance process.

→ Bank / wallet / payment service involved
→ Transaction / UTR / reference number
→ Date and time of transaction
→ Amount involved
→ Bank complaint / acknowledgement number
→ 1930 / Cyber Crime complaint acknowledgement details
→ Relevant SMS, emails, screenshots or other supporting evidence
Cyber fraud is different from an ordinary bank complaint.

If a fraud or unauthorised transaction has just occurred, do not wait for the normal Branch → Regional Office → Zonal Office → Principal Nodal Officer escalation sequence before taking the immediate reporting steps above.
