BANKBODH BANKING GUIDE
CIBIL Score, Credit Reports & Credit Information Companies (CICs)
Understand your credit report, see what banks examine before approving a loan, and learn how to correct errors or raise a complaint.
1. What Are Credit Information Companies?
Credit Information Companies (CICs) receive credit-related information from banks and other reporting institutions and prepare credit information reports. Lenders use these reports to assess borrowing and repayment history when considering new credit.
Credit report
A detailed record of reported loans, credit cards, repayment history, balances, overdue amounts and lender enquiries.
Credit score
A numerical assessment derived from credit-related information. It is one indicator of credit risk, not a loan approval decision.
2. The Four CICs in India
Four Credit Information Companies are registered with the Reserve Bank of India.
| Credit Information Company | Common name | Official website |
|---|---|---|
| TransUnion CIBIL Limited | CIBIL | cibil.com ↗ |
| Experian Credit Information Company of India | Experian | experian.in ↗ |
| Equifax Credit Information Services | Equifax | equifax.co.in ↗ |
| CRIF High Mark Credit Information Services | CRIF High Mark | crifhighmark.com ↗ |
Your scores and reports may differ across CICs because of differences in reporting, timing and proprietary scoring models. A lender may obtain information from one or more CICs.
3. Understanding Your Credit Score
Individual credit scores in India are commonly presented on a 300–900 scale. A higher score generally indicates a stronger credit profile, but different CICs use different models.
What may affect your score?
- Timely EMI and credit-card payments
- Overdues and repayment delays
- Credit-card utilisation
- Existing borrowing and credit history
- Recent credit applications and enquiries
What a score does not tell you
- Whether a loan must be approved
- Whether the applicant meets income criteria
- Whether existing EMIs are affordable
- Whether an enquiry led to loan rejection
- Whether all entries in the report are correct
4. How to Get Your Free Credit Report
Individuals whose credit history is available with a CIC can request one free full credit report, including the score, from each CIC in a calendar year. The four CICs have separate facilities.
- Visit the CIC’s official website using the links above.
- Find its free full credit report facility and complete identity verification.
- Access or download your report.
- Check all accounts, balances, repayment history, enquiries and personal information.
5. How to Read Your Credit Report
Do not look only at the score. Review the account-level details and the dates to which they relate.
| Entry | What to check |
|---|---|
| Lender and account type | Do you recognise the loan, credit card or overdraft? |
| Sanctioned amount / credit limit | Does the reported limit match your records? |
| Current balance and amount overdue | Are these consistent with your latest statements and repayments? |
| DPD (Days Past Due) | Was any payment reported late? Check the month and number of days. |
| Account status | Is the facility active, closed, settled, written-off or otherwise classified? |
| Reporting date | How recent is the information? |
| Enquiries and addresses | Do you recognise the lenders and identifying details? |
Understanding DPD
| Illustrative DPD | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 000 | No days past due in the relevant period |
| 030 | 30 days past due |
| 060 | 60 days past due |
| 090 | 90 days past due |
Reports can also contain other codes and status fields. Read the particular CIC’s explanation of its report format.
Closed, Settled and Written-off Are Different
Closed generally indicates closure of the credit account. Settled can indicate a compromise in which the lender accepted less than the amount contractually due because of repayment difficulty. Written-off is an accounting classification and does not, by itself, waive the borrower’s liability. An accurate settlement or default history is not automatically removed after repayment.
6. What Do Banks Look for in a CIBIL Report?
A bank looks beyond the score. It may examine recent borrowing behaviour, repayment discipline, existing liabilities and inconsistencies that need clarification. The following are practical credit-appraisal indicators, not automatic RBI-prescribed grounds for rejecting a loan.
Many enquiries in a short period
Numerous recent lender enquiries may suggest active credit-seeking or potential additional borrowing. They do not prove that earlier applications were rejected. Some enquiries may arise from genuine comparison shopping.
Multiple gold loans
Several recently availed or repeatedly renewed gold loans may prompt questions about short-term liquidity needs. This must be assessed with the borrower’s income, purpose of borrowing and repayment record; it is not automatically evidence of financial distress.
Frequent or inconsistent addresses
Different addresses reported by lenders may require KYC or residence verification. Job transfers, relocation and differences between permanent and correspondence addresses can explain the changes.
Outstanding loans, EMIs and disclosed liabilities
Existing housing, vehicle, personal and other loan repayments affect the income available for a proposed EMI. Banks may compare the loans declared in the application with those appearing in credit reports and other records. Any difference may need clarification.
Repayment conduct and other obligations
Repeated DPD, overdue amounts, settled or written-off accounts, suit-filed status, high revolving-credit utilisation and recently opened loans may affect appraisal. Banks may also examine relevant co-borrowers’ and guarantors’ credit histories and obligations.
Example: How Existing EMIs Affect Eligibility
| Net monthly income | ₹80,000 |
|---|---|
| Existing home loan EMI | ₹18,000 |
| Existing personal loan EMI | ₹12,000 |
| Proposed vehicle loan EMI | ₹15,000 |
| Total EMIs after new loan | ₹45,000 |
| EMIs as a share of income | 56.25% |
Illustration only. Acceptable repayment ratios and eligible income differ by lender, borrower and loan product. Credit-report balances do not always establish the exact current EMI.
Credit reports may not show every current borrowing or obligation. Banks may also use account statements, income records, loan documents and information provided by the applicant to verify liabilities.
7. Common Errors in Credit Reports
| Problem | Useful supporting record |
|---|---|
| Loan remains active after closure | Closure letter, no-dues certificate, final statement |
| Incorrect overdue amount or DPD | Repayment receipts, bank statement, EMI schedule |
| Unfamiliar loan or credit card | Identity documents and complaint details |
| Duplicate account | Loan account details and lender correspondence |
| Incorrect settled / written-off status | Full-payment or settlement records |
| Incorrect name, PAN or address | Relevant identification and KYC documents |
| Unknown lender enquiry | Application records or correspondence |
Example: You fully repay a personal loan and obtain a closure letter, but your report still shows a balance. Check the latest reporting date, then ask the lender or CIC to investigate and correct the entry if it is inaccurate.
8. How to Correct an Error
- Identify the entry: Note the lender, account, disputed information and reporting date.
- Gather evidence: Keep statements, receipts, closure letters or other relevant records.
- Raise a complaint: Approach the reporting lender or the CIC through its official dispute facility.
- Save the acknowledgement: Record the original complaint date and reference number.
- Verify the outcome: Check the revised report and ask for reasons if correction is refused.
Role of the lender
Verify its underlying records and submit accurate or corrected credit information.
Role of the CIC
Process the dispute and update its records using verified information under the applicable framework.
9. RBI Correction Timelines and Compensation
₹100 per calendar day for eligible delay
Under RBI’s credit-information correction framework, eligible complainants may receive ₹100 per calendar day when a covered correction complaint remains unresolved beyond 30 calendar days from its initial filing, subject to the applicable conditions and exclusions.
The 21-day and 9-day periods allocate responsibility within the combined timeline. They are not two additional waiting periods for the borrower. Depending on the cause of delay, the lender, CIC or both may bear compensation responsibility.
The complainant should retain the first acknowledgement and provide the information needed for compensation payment. Where applicable, the framework also prescribes communication of reasons for rejection and payment of compensation within the specified period after resolution.
10. How Often Is Credit Information Updated?
More frequent reporting reference dates
Under the amended RBI reporting framework, credit institutions submit information with reference to the 9th, 16th, 23rd and last day of each month, following the prescribed full-file and incremental reporting timelines. This replaced the earlier fortnightly reference-date arrangement for covered institutions.
A payment or loan closure may not appear immediately. Allow for the reporting and processing cycle, but do not assume that a persistent incorrect entry is acceptable merely because reports update periodically.
Customer alerts
- Credit institutions are required to send prescribed SMS or email alerts concerning reported defaults / days past due where contact details are available.
- CICs are required to send prescribed SMS or email alerts when a lender accesses a customer’s credit information report, subject to applicable conditions and available contact details.
11. How to Improve Your Credit Profile
- Pay EMIs and credit-card dues on time.
- Avoid consistently using most of your available revolving-credit limits.
- Apply for new loans or cards only when needed.
- Keep borrowing and total EMIs manageable.
- Review reports periodically and dispute genuine inaccuracies.
- After closing a loan, check that the balance and status are correctly updated.
- Understand the reporting consequences before accepting a compromise settlement.
There is no guaranteed time frame for improving a score. Beware of services promising to erase accurate adverse history or guarantee a particular score for a fee.
12. Special Situations
Joint borrowers and guarantors
Joint loans and guarantees may be reflected in the relevant persons’ credit records. A lender may review the credit history of the borrower, co-borrower and guarantor, as applicable, when considering new credit. A guarantee is not necessarily treated as an ordinary monthly EMI in every case.
Settled loan still appearing
An accurate settlement status may remain part of the credit history. Seek correction if the outstanding balance or status is wrongly reported, not merely because a genuine settlement is visible.
Unknown loan or credit card
Contact the reporting lender and CIC promptly. Preserve evidence and complaint numbers. If identity misuse is suspected, consider reporting it through the appropriate cybercrime or law-enforcement channel.
Rejected loan applications
A credit enquiry does not show that an application was rejected. RBI’s reporting framework does not treat a lender’s rejection decision as an ordinary credit-report entry.
No previous credit history
A first-time borrower may not have a numerical score. Lack of credit history alone should not be confused with a poor repayment record.
13. Complaints and Escalation
- Complain first to the lender or CIC: Explain the disputed entry and attach records. Keep the complaint acknowledgement.
- Review the response: Check whether the issue has been corrected and whether any delay compensation is due.
- Consider RBI Ombudsman where eligible: Under the Reserve Bank – Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2026, an eligible complaint may be filed if the response is unsatisfactory, or the applicable response period has expired without a response.
Normally, first approach the regulated entity. For eligible matters, the Ombudsman route is available after an unsatisfactory response or expiry of the applicable response period (ordinarily 30 days, or a longer period where prescribed). The 2026 Scheme generally sets a 90-day filing window from expiry of that period or the last communication, whichever is later, subject to its conditions and exclusions.
The Ombudsman Scheme excludes certain matters, including specified remedies under section 18 of the Credit Information Companies (Regulation) Act, 2005, and commercial lending decisions. Eligibility must be checked for the specific grievance. RBI Ombudsman complaints are free of charge.
14. Frequently Asked Questions
Is a CIBIL score of 750 compulsory for a bank loan?
No. RBI does not prescribe 750 as a universal minimum. Lenders apply their own credit and product criteria.
Can a bank reject a loan despite a good score?
Yes. Income, existing EMIs, repayment conduct, other liabilities and the lender’s policy also matter.
Do many enquiries mean earlier lenders rejected me?
No. An enquiry records a credit-information request, not the outcome of the application.
Are multiple gold loans automatically negative?
No. They may prompt further questions about borrowing and liquidity, but the bank should assess the full circumstances.
Do banks count existing EMIs for loan eligibility?
Yes. Existing repayment commitments help determine the capacity to service a proposed loan.
Do address changes affect loan approval?
They may require verification, but genuine relocation or job transfers are not automatically adverse.
Does checking my own report lower my score?
No. A self-check is different from a lender enquiry associated with a credit application.
Can I get a free report from all four CICs?
Yes. If the CIC holds your credit history, you may request one free full report, including score, from that CIC each calendar year.
My closed loan still shows outstanding. What should I do?
Check the reporting date, then dispute an inaccurate entry with the lender or CIC using your closure and payment records.
What does DPD mean?
Days Past Due. It indicates repayment delay for a particular reporting period.
Is a settled loan the same as a closed loan?
No. A compromise settlement can be reported differently from full contractual repayment.
Can genuine late payments be deleted after repayment?
Not merely because the loan has been repaid. You can dispute inaccurate entries, not demand deletion of accurate history.
How long should correction take?
The RBI correction framework provides a combined 30-calendar-day period for eligible correction complaints.
When is ₹100-per-day compensation available?
For eligible complaints unresolved beyond the prescribed 30-day period, subject to the framework’s conditions and exclusions.
What if a loan I never took appears in my report?
Contact the reporting lender and CIC promptly, retain evidence, and consider reporting suspected identity misuse to the appropriate authorities.
