Closing a bank account is usually straightforward, but it is worth checking a few things before submitting the request. An account may still be receiving important credits or may have EMIs, mandates or other payments linked to it.
Before closing your account, shift important incoming credits and outgoing payments, check linked banking products, download any statements you may need later and follow your bank’s prescribed closure procedure. After closure, keep the acknowledgement or confirmation for your records.
Before closing — check what is coming in and going out
Do not look only at the present balance. Check whether the account is still registered for any future credits or recurring payments.
Check whether this account is registered for:
- Salary or pension
- Government benefits, DBT or subsidies
- Insurance maturity, survival benefit or other policy proceeds
- Mutual fund redemption or other mutual-fund payments
- Dividends or other investment-related credits
- Income-tax or other refunds
- Rent or recurring receipts
- Any other expected future credit
Check whether the account is being used for:
- Loan EMIs
- Mutual fund SIPs
- Insurance premiums
- NACH / ECS mandates
- Standing instructions
- UPI AutoPay mandates
- Credit-card payments
- Utility bills or subscriptions
- Any other recurring payment
Do not simply withdraw the entire balance and stop using the account. A zero balance does not necessarily mean that the account has been formally closed. Submit the required closure request and obtain confirmation from the bank.
How do I close the account?
The exact procedure can differ from bank to bank and may also depend on the type of account. Broadly, the process may involve the following:
Check whether your bank requires a prescribed account-closure form or another written request.
Provide the account details and other information required by the bank. Identity and signature may also be verified.
Follow your bank’s procedure regarding unused cheque leaves, debit card and other facilities attached to the account.
The bank will calculate/apply interest, wherever applicable, and account for applicable charges or other dues before arriving at the final amount payable or receivable.
Keep the acknowledgement of your request and obtain closure confirmation or a final statement, where available.
What happens to the balance in the account?
Before closing the account, the bank will calculate/apply interest, wherever applicable, and arrive at the final balance after accounting for applicable charges or other dues.
On your written request, the final amount can generally be transferred to your account with another bank through NEFT or RTGS, as applicable.
For a small balance, cash withdrawal/payment may be preferred, subject to the bank’s procedure and applicable rules.
Sometimes a Savings or Current Account may show a debit balance because of accumulated charges, fees or other amounts levied by the bank.
In such a case, you may be required to clear the outstanding amount before the account can be closed.
If you believe that any charge or fee has been wrongly levied, ask the bank for its details and take up the matter with the bank for reversal or removal instead of simply paying an amount that you dispute.
If the matter is not resolved, you can use the bank’s formal complaint and escalation mechanism.
Find your Bank’s Complaint & Escalation Channels →What if it is a joint account?
Closure of a joint account will depend on the account mandate and the bank’s procedure. The bank may require the consent or signatures of the account holders, as applicable.
Do not assume that one holder can close the account merely because that person has been operating it. Check the mandate and the bank’s requirements.
What if the account is inoperative or debit-frozen?
An inoperative or restricted account may require additional customer verification or KYC-related steps. Ask the bank what verification or procedure is required for closure in your particular case.
Do not assume that the procedure will be identical to closure of a normally operative account.
Check linked products before closing
If the account is linked to another banking or investment product, check whether the link needs to be changed before closure.
Check maturity proceeds, interest credits and sweep-linked deposits.
Check whether locker rent is being recovered from this account.
Update the linked bank account where required.
Check both premium payments and the account registered for future proceeds.
Check SIP mandates as well as the account registered for redemption payments.
Check any other banking or investment relationship linked to the account.
Will the bank charge for closing the account?
Account-closure charges, if applicable, can depend on the bank, type of account and applicable terms. There is no reason to assume that every bank follows the same charge or the same free period.
Check your bank’s latest Schedule of Charges or ask the bank what closure charge, if any, applies to your account.
Keep proof of closure
Retain the acknowledgement of your closure request and, where available, the bank’s closure confirmation or final statement.
This can be useful later if there is any question about a transaction, mandate, charge or the date on which the account was closed.
Bank delaying or refusing to close the account?
Find out whether some document, verification, outstanding amount or linked facility is preventing closure.
If the issue is not resolved, use the bank’s complaint and escalation mechanism and retain the complaint/reference number.
If the bank rejects the complaint wholly or partly and you remain dissatisfied, or does not reply within the prescribed period, further escalation may be available under the applicable RBI Ombudsman framework, subject to its conditions.
Frequently asked questions
Can I just withdraw all the money and stop using the account?
That does not necessarily close the account. Follow the bank’s closure procedure and obtain confirmation that the account has actually been closed.
Should I change my insurance bank details before closing?
If the account is registered for insurance maturity, survival benefit, claim or other policy proceeds, update the bank details with the insurer where required before closing the account.
What should I check for my mutual funds?
Check both SIP or other debit mandates and the bank account registered for redemption or other mutual-fund payments. Update the relevant records before closure where required.
Can one holder close a joint account?
Do not assume so. The requirement depends on the account mandate and the bank’s applicable procedure.
Can an inoperative account be closed?
Ask the bank for the applicable procedure. Customer verification or KYC-related requirements may need to be completed depending on the circumstances.
Is account closure always free?
Not necessarily. Check the bank’s current Schedule of Charges and the terms applicable to your account.
The procedure for closing a loan account is different from closing a Savings or Current Account.
It may involve calculation of the outstanding loan amount, interest and applicable charges, repayment of dues, release of securities or documents, removal of lien/charge where applicable, and obtaining loan-closure or no-dues confirmation.
