Moved home, changed your mobile number or email, or need your name changed or corrected in your bank records? Keeping these details updated is important for KYC, communication, transaction alerts and access to banking services.
The exact procedure may differ between banks. This guide explains the applicable RBI framework and what you can generally expect when approaching your bank.
1. I Want to Change My Address
If only your address has changed, you do not necessarily have to update your Aadhaar first before approaching your bank.
My OVD Already Shows My New Address
Submit the OVD showing your new address through the channel permitted by your bank. This is generally the simplest way to update the address in your bank records.
My OVD Still Shows My Old Address
Where only your address has changed, RBI permits the bank to obtain a self-declaration of your new address.
The bank is required to verify the declared address through positive confirmation within two months.
Depending on its approved KYC policy, your bank may nevertheless ask for an OVD or deemed OVD as proof of the declared address.
Not necessarily. If only your address has changed, the RBI KYC framework provides a self-declaration route for updating the address, subject to the bank’s verification and applicable KYC procedure.
If Your OVD Does Not Contain Your Current Address
If the OVD does not contain your current address, certain documents can be treated as deemed OVDs for the limited purpose of proof of address, including:
Electricity, telephone, post-paid mobile, piped gas or water bill.
Containing the address.
Eligible accommodation allotment letters or leave-and-licence arrangements as permitted under RBI KYC rules.
Importantly, this deemed-OVD route normally requires you to subsequently submit an OVD containing your current address within 3 months.
The self-declaration route for a change only in address and the deemed-OVD route are separate provisions and have different requirements.
Banks commonly ask for an OVD showing the updated address, particularly when the permanent address itself is being changed. For a current or correspondence address, the bank’s procedure may permit a declaration followed by verification.

2. I Want to Change My Registered Mobile Number
Your registered mobile number is particularly important because it may be used for transaction alerts, OTPs and authentication.
If you request the change through a branch, you will generally be required to complete or sign the bank’s prescribed request and establish your identity.
Some banks may require the customer to visit the branch personally. They may also maintain a separate mobile-number-change register or other additional record in which the customer is required to sign.
Other banks may provide an authenticated ATM, internet-banking, mobile-banking or another approved facility for changing the registered mobile number.
I No Longer Have Access to My Old Mobile Number
Contact your bank promptly. If the bank’s digital process requires authentication through your old mobile number, you may need to visit a branch and complete the identity verification required by the bank.
Do not assume that the change has been completed merely because you submitted the request. Check that subsequent transaction alerts and OTPs are actually reaching your new number.
RBI’s KYC framework governs customer information and its updation, while the exact operational procedure for changing a registered mobile number may be determined by the bank’s secure internal process.

3. I Want to Change My Registered Email Address
Your registered email address may be used for account statements, alerts, service communications and other correspondence from your bank.
The exact procedure depends on your bank. Your bank may permit the email address to be changed through an authenticated digital channel or may require you to submit a request through the branch.
If you are changing it at a branch, be prepared to complete or sign the bank’s prescribed request and establish your identity.
Check that your new email address has been correctly recorded and that subsequent statements or bank communications are reaching the new address.
Never change your registered mobile number or email through a link received in an unsolicited SMS, email or WhatsApp message. Use only your bank’s official website, app, ATM or branch.
The RBI KYC framework recognises registered contact information and communication channels. The exact operational procedure for changing the registered email address may be bank-specific.

4. I Want to Change My Name in My Bank Account
The documents and procedure can depend on why your name needs to be changed or corrected.
There Is Only a Spelling Error in the Bank’s Record
Ask the bank to correct its records and carry the appropriate KYC or identity document showing your correct name. The exact correction procedure may differ between banks.
My Name Changed After Marriage
Submit the bank’s prescribed request together with the appropriate supporting documents.
Under the RBI KYC framework, an OVD carrying the previous name can continue to be accepted when supported by a marriage certificate issued by the State Government indicating the change of name.
I Have Formally Changed My Name for Another Reason
The RBI KYC framework similarly accommodates an OVD carrying the earlier name when supported by a Gazette notification indicating the change of name.
A bank may seek additional supporting documents according to its applicable procedure. Requirements can therefore differ between banks.
A wedding invitation card or newspaper notice should not be treated as a universal RBI requirement merely because an individual bank or branch asks for additional supporting evidence.
Not necessarily. RBI’s KYC framework specifically accommodates an OVD containing the earlier name where the name change is supported by the prescribed marriage certificate or Gazette notification, as applicable.

Do I Have to Visit My Home Branch?
Not necessarily. The available channel depends on the type of change and your bank’s procedure.
Some changes may be available through authenticated digital channels, ATM or another branch, while sensitive profile changes may require a branch visit and additional verification.
Check your bank’s official website, mobile app or customer-care information to see whether the change can be completed online, through an ATM, or at another branch.
After the Change — What Should I Check?
- Check that your name, address, mobile number or email has actually been updated in the bank’s records.
- After changing your mobile number, confirm that transaction alerts and OTPs reach the new number.
- After changing your email, check that statements and other communications reach the new email address.
- Where relevant, check whether the updated information has also been reflected in your KYC / CKYC records.
- If your name has changed, gradually align your other important financial and KYC records to avoid future mismatches.
- Keep the acknowledgement or reference number for the request until you have confirmed that the change has been completed.
